“Should people be using zirconia for veneers right now?
A very popular dental material is zirconia, and the biggest thing, or the biggest draw, for dentists to zirconia is the strength of it because it’s kind of the super-strong material that we have.
It’s becoming more aesthetic. It’s just not my favorite material. And the reason why I should say that, especially for a traditional porcelain veneer, is because I just don’t think it is as aesthetic as our glass ceramics, which is what we traditionally made veneers out of.
We just don’t know that it’s going to stick to the teeth as well as the glass. So why would I change to something that I have question marks around just because I think it’s a little bit stronger when I’m not seeing things break?
And more importantly to me, I need to make sure that stuff stays attached to the teeth because that’s the biggest challenge.
One of the biggest fears I hear from patients is, ‘Well, are they going to fall off?’”
