A friendly smile may be a secret to business success, according to a growing body of research.
Of course, a healthy smile is every bit as important as a welcoming, attractive smile. A knowledgeable, skilled cosmetic dentist can help you maintain or restore a beautiful smile and good oral health.
Smile = Loyalty
A smile and a warm greeting can promote feelings of loyalty toward small businesses, according to research conducted by the Kingston Business School at London’s Kingston University.
The study focused on the retail behavior of more than 2,000 consumers and the business practices of more than 1,200 small and medium, independent companies. Consumers revealed that a smile and friendly greeting was the most common reason why they felt loyal toward an independent enterprise.
More to Smile About
Ron Gutman, the founder and CEO of the mobile app HealthTap, last year led a TED Talk that focused on the hidden power of smiling.
In his presentation, Gutman cited a Penn State University study that found people who smile are perceived as more likable, courteous and competent. Smiling also offers more personal benefits.
Smiling stimulates pleasure centers in the brain and makes us feel better. Smiling is also contagious; a smile can cause someone else to smile in return, making everyone involved in a smile outbreak happier.
Smiling and Positivity
Additional research indicates that a smile accompanied by a positive attitude can make an even bigger difference.
The Harvard Business Review article “Positive Intelligence” discusses research that shows those who have positive outlooks perform better across multiple platforms, including productivity, work engagement, and creativity; one business mentioned in the article attempts to improve happiness and social support among its employees by asking them to make eye contact, smile and offer a greeting when passing in close proximity to others. Ongoing research at Australia’s Queensland University of Technology is focusing on whether personal happiness contributes to business success.
