Dental implants could be the solution you’ve been looking for to replace a missing tooth, or teeth
Losing a tooth isn’t just an issue of aesthetics and vanity, it can have a significant impact on your overall dental health. For many years, if you lost a tooth, your only treatment options were bridges and removable dentures. Because they can provide a permanent solution to missing teeth, dental implants are one of the greatest achievements of modern dentistry. Colorado Springs dental implants expert Dr. Andrew Hall talks us through dental implants and whether it could be the right choice for you.
What is a dental implant?
Basically speaking, a dental implant is a replacement for the root of your lost tooth, or teeth, to which a dental crown is then attached, fully restoring the function of your bite. Designed to perfectly mimic your natural tooth, dental implants can help you to regain your ability to chew and speak properly, eliminating the risk of gum disease taking residence. While the process can be quite lengthy, it’s very worthwhile for the right patients.
What’s involved in getting a dental implant?
The first step on your dental implant journey is to implant a tiny titanium post into the jawbone below your missing tooth. Made of titanium, this post won’t be perceived as a foreign object in your body, so your jawbone will then start to regrow around the post, fixing it in place permanently. This process is known as osseointegration and may take several months. This time will vary from patient to patient and will be closely monitored. During this time you’ll be fitted with a temporary dental crown which protects the implant and restores some functionality.
Once the implant is confirmed to have taken to your jawbone, a custom-crafted medical-grade porcelain dental crown can be affixed to the post, fully restoring your smile. The dental crown is created in-house at The Studio for Exceptional Dentistry using our highly advanced CEREC technology, ensuring it will be the perfect fit and colour for your mouth.
How long do dental implants last?
Just like your natural teeth, the longevity of a dental implant is dependent on your oral hygiene. With a good dental routine including daily brushing and flossing and regular check-ups, your dental implant could last you for ten years, or even longer!
Why are dental implants better than other options?
Unlike removable dentures which require messy adhesives and often slip into your mouth as you try to talk and chew, dental implants are permanent. Because they are fused into your jawbone, you’ll find chewing is far easier, and you’ll never have to worry about slurring your words when you speak. Dental implants truly are the next best thing to your own natural tooth.
