Robots in the Dental Office

Robots, in recent years, have become an increasingly common and helpful tool in medical procedures. While much attention is focused on robot-assisted surgical procedures, robotic technology is also beneficial to dentists and dental patients.

Colorado Springs dentist Dr. Andrew Hall is dedicated to offering patients the most effective and most comfortable cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and neuromuscular dentistry treatments available. That’s why The Studio for Exceptional Dentistry employs state-of-the-art technology to help you achieve and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Robotics and Dental Crowns

A recent Voice of America (VOA) article examined the robotic machines used to rapidly craft dental crowns. Dental crowns are used in the treatment of damaged teeth, as well as with dental implants to replace missing teeth, and their creation and placement used to require several office visits; today, some robot-based machines can help complete the procedure in about an hour.

The technology described in the VOA news article helps create precise models of a patient’s mouth and existing teeth, and for the dental crowns. A computer provides directions to a robotic milling machine, which then crafts a crown from a cube of dental-grade porcelain; the crown is designed to resemble a healthy, natural tooth and to fit seamlessly with your smile.

The dental crown process used to require physical moulds of the mouth. As patients were waiting weeks for their crowns to be shaped in a laboratory, they would wear temporary crowns, which capped and encircled the damaged tooth or dental implant post. The technology used by many dentists now allows the crown procedure to be conducted in a single visit.

Technology and Other Dental Procedures

Patients who need crowns are not the only ones who can benefit from such dental technology.

Dr Hall, for example, utilizes digital X-rays to detect tooth decay, developmental abnormalities and other oral health issues. Dr Hall also uses three-dimensional digital imaging to diagnose dental health problems and devise highly customized treatment plans.

The Studio for Exceptional Dentistry is additionally home to CEREC technology. CEREC allows Dr Hall to create and place ceramic restorations including dental crowns and porcelain inlays and onlays in one brief office visit.
